Breast augmentation surgery consists of placing a breast prosthesis through a small incision in the inframammary fold (under the chest), in the lower half of the areola or in the armpit.

The intervention usually lasts 1 hour and is performed under general anesthesia. It is necessary to stay 1 night in the hospital, after which you can go home.

Prostheses can be classified according to their shape, according to the manufacturing material and according to the cover (outer layer) of the prosthesis.

Depending on the shape, we find round-based and anatomical prostheses.

Round prostheses provide volume homogeneously to the entire breast, being the most used and with which we have the most experience. Anatomical prostheses have a stable shape, teardrop-shaped, imitating the shape of the breast and are used in breast reconstruction, breast hypoplasia or in trans women.

As for the filling material, silicone gel prostheses predominate in Europe. Physiological saline prostheses are also placed in the US.

Finally, the surface of the roof can be smooth or textured, and between them, have different roughness. There are also prostheses with a micropolyurethane cover, which have some advantages over the usual cover.

Breast prostheses can be placed in front of the muscle (prepectoral or subglandular) or behind the pectoralis major muscle (retropectoral). In front of the muscle, a pocket is made behind the mammary gland. In case of placing it behind the muscle, it can be placed completely covered by the muscle (total retropectoralis) or partially covered in its upper half (dual-plane).

For the first few hours after surgery you will be hospitalized and will wear a breast bandage. The next day, after the medical visit, you will be able to go home, resting your arms and following the indications for treatment and cures that we recommend. After 3-4 days you will return to the consultation to review the surgery and remove stitches. You will wear a postoperative bra, day and night, which we will keep until you are 1 month old.

Up to 10-15 postoperative days you should avoid efforts with both arms. From then on, you will gradually recover your usual activity. After 2 months you can resume impact physical exercise, always gradually.
