A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia, typically lasting 2 to 3 hours depending on the type of incisions required and whether any additional procedures are involved. Most patients stay in the clinic overnight, although in select cases the surgery may be performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia and sedation.

During the procedure, the breast glandular tissue is reshaped and lifted to create a more youthful and harmonious breast contour. The nipple-areola complex is repositioned to a higher, more aesthetic location, and its diameter can also be reduced if necessary.

If the patient has insufficient breast tissue to achieve the desired volume, the surgery may be complemented by the placement of a breast implant or fat grafting (lipofilling) using the patient’s own fat.

Once at home, you will need to rest for at least the first 1 to 2 weeks, avoiding any strenuous activity involving your arms. You’ll be required to wear a postoperative bra continuously during the first few weeks, both day and night. In the initial days, you may need assistance, although most patients are able to resume daily activities within two weeks. Scar care will be essential during the first months, following specific instructions, to help ensure the scars become as inconspicuous as possible over time.

The surgery does not contraindicate breastfeeding, but it is generally not recommended, as during breastfeeding the mammary gland enlarges and then atrophies, which could reverse some of the surgical results and accelerate breast sagging.
